At its founding in 1987, EBTC's sole office was in Cleveland with regional offices added in ensuing years in Cincinnati, Columbus, and most recently, Athens. As a part of the reorganization process, the statewide EBTC office—now BioOhio—was relocated to Columbus early in 2002.

Each regional operation shares the basic economic development imperatives at the core of the BioOhio mission, which are to nurture and commercialize biosciences technologies through the formation of new companies and the attraction of companies from out of state. The new organizational structure increases efficiency, while significantly building local energy and involvement.

BioEnterprise is a business formation, recruitment, and acceleration initiative designed to grow bioscience companies. Companies include emerging medical device, biopharmaceutical, and health care services firms. BioEnterprise provides management counsel, clinical access, business development, and capital access services to these companies.

Each year BioEnterprise chooses a select group of companies to join its client base. Being selective allows BioEnterprise to focus its strengths to help companies achieve greater levels of business success.

Based in Cleveland, BioEnterprise’s founders and partners are The Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals Health System, Case Western Reserve University, and Summa Health System. The initiative comprises the collective activities of BioEnterprise and each of the institutions' commercialization offices: the Case Research Institute Office of Technology Transfer, Cleveland Clinic Innovations, and Summa Enterprise Group.

The BioEnterprise Initiative efforts have created, recruited, and accelerated more than 50 companies that have attracted $260 million in new funding since 2003.
